What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway in the wrist. The tunnel is surrounded by small bones called carpal bones, hence the name carpal tunnel. Under the carpal bones is the median nerve and flexor tendon. When the nerve is squeezed or pressed, carpal tunnel syndrome can quickly develop.
What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Although there is not a specific cause for carpal tunnel syndrome there are certain types of conditions such as arthritis, obesity, diabetes, pregnancy and trauma. Others who spend a substantial amount of time doing repetitive motions can also be prone to experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome.
What are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome has several symptoms including:
- Tingling in the hand
- Numbness in the index, middle, ring fingers and thumb
- Burning sensation
- Hand cramps
- Hand Weakness
- Symptoms may get worse at night
- Loss of ability to tell the difference between hot and cold
Treatment Options for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be treated in two different ways:
